Services. 1. Scanning and
OCR
Using superior
scanning and optical character recognition software we produce a
variety of image files (such as .tif or .pdf) that can be edited
to improve their quality. After our program recognizes the text
in the images, it can be saved into Word or text files that
accurately match their originals. Two people will then proofread
the files to insure the ultimate accuracy of the text. The files
may also be coded/tagged for typesetting.
2. Coding/Tagging
We can code/tag
any Word or text file for easy typesetting. Currently we input
codes/tags for programs such as Quark Xpress, Indesign, and
Miles. These codes/tags allow typesetters to set recurring
elements within a book all at once.
3. Input of
Copyedits
Once a copyeditor
has finished with a manuscript, the publisher will send us the
copyedited manuscript and e-mail us the file for the book. We
then input the edits into the file. A second person checks the
edits after they have been input. Usually the file is a Word
file, but it may also be converted into a coded/tagged text
file.
4. Americanization
We change British
punctuation to American punctuation, and the British spelling to
the American spelling as specified by the client. Some publishing
houses want to remove all British spelling, and some like to keep
certain words with the British spelling in order to retain the
British flavor. We will follow your house style.
5. Proofreading
We offer
proofreading of manuscripts in page-proofs. Usually we will
receive the copyedited manuscript and the typeset manuscript
together. We then read and compare the two to make sure that the
edits are in, and that they are correct. We mark any errors
that may have made it into the book at that stage, including
printer errors such as stacks, widows, orphans, and bad breaks.
